Music on the Road

In the last three months, I’ve traveled more than 8,000 miles! My husband and I continued our exploration of the east coast in March, heading from northern Virginia down the Outer Banks to Savannah, and back to northwest Georgia to see our families. Doug left for his summer gig in Alaska in April, and two weeks later I left Georgia for a mostly-solo trek across the US. It took me about a month from start to finish, and I learned so much about myself, our RV, and the United States.

It’ll take me a while to unpack (pun always intended) all 4,631 miles of my journey, but in the meantime, I thought it’d be fun to share a few musical highlights!

  • Savannah Music Festival made its triumphant return to live music with the first full festival since 2019. It was so fun to catch up with my SMF family and to see some incredible music.

  • I had the best museum experience at the Gateway to the Blues Museum in Tunica, MS. It’s worth a stop! And I drove down through the Mississippi Delta down the Blues Highway, U.S. Route 61 (even got to see the crossroads of U.S. 61 and U.S. 49 in Clarksdale where Robert Johnson supposedly sold his sold to the Devil).

  • I ate up Lafayette, LA for Festival International - both literally (I’m craving a bread bowl right now!) and figuratively. This was also the first Festival since 2019, and the crowds loved it.

  • Chewy and I stopped for a quiet lunch at the Round Top Festival Institute in Round Top, TX. I’d love to go back for a performance in their Festival Concert Hall (it has been under construction since 1981 and has an incredible amount of detail in its design… I peeked in the windows like a weirdo).

  • I got the chance to see a dress rehearsal of Swan Lake with Ballet Austin and Austin Symphony Orchestra. What a gorgeous production, and the Long Center is a gem.

  • I listened to hours of music, podcasts, and my own thoughts. And of course, when I entered Texas, I played “On the Road Again” by Texas native Willie Nelson.

What about you? What great performing arts have you seen lately? Are you headed to any summer music festivals? Do you have a playlist you crank up during a long road trip? I’d love to hear about it.
